Under Network Rail's Midlands Rail Hub proposals for the Bordesley Chords, some of the city's best-known music and nightlife spaces face demolition or displacement. That includes Club Colette, XOYO, The Night Owl, Mama Roux's, Luna Springs, Suki10c and The Drop Inn, alongside other key venues and independent businesses.

These are businesses that have taken years, in some cases over a decade, to build. They employ bar staff, sound engineers, promoters and security. They're where new artists play their first shows, where subcultures come together, and where a huge amount of Birmingham's creative identity actually lives.

What are we calling for?

Firstly, a rethink. The Midlands Rail Hub Alliance and Network Rail have described this as an early-stage consultation, which means there's still time for the plans to change. We're asking for every alternative way of delivering the scheme to be properly re-examined, including options put forward by people who responded to the consultation, with the full cultural and economic value of Digbeth on the table this time.

Second, whatever the final design, guaranteed protection for the businesses affected:

• Relocation and transition support for every venue facing displacement or demolition.

• Market value compensation to see businesses through the disruption

• A guaranteed seat at the table for affected Digbeth businesses through every stage of the process, including a facilitated discussion specifically for night-time economy businesses.

• A clear timeline, so the people running these venues aren't left in limbo. Many are already reporting serious stress and uncertainty.

Why now?

The first consultation closed on 28th August with over 3,500 responses. The next one isn't until summer 2027, with a Transport and Works Act Order submission and a public inquiry to follow in 2028. Plans harden fast. If Digbeth's voice isn't heard now, it risks becoming an afterthought.
